Introducing Sophia Document

Sophia Document is an interactive AI tool that can assist in understanding and extracting key information from patent documents. You can interact with it by asking questions or prompting it to perform specific review tasks.

This AI-powered tool (see our disclaimer over here) intends to:

  • Accelerate your review work
  • Target information retrieval
  • Enhance comprehension
  • And provide a pre-analysis support

[Beta testing, July 2025] This feature is currently available on our Beta server for most curious users. Once released, this feature will require at least, Advanced level subscription. If you already want to change your plan, please contact your Key Account Manager.

Start chatting with this patent

By default, when you open Sophia Document tab, the representative member is selected to chat with. Please see your user settings / Display section if you want to change this default selection.

You can start or continue chatting with another family's member, by clicking on the desired member from the left-hand pane - the center panel content will be reloaded.

From the hitlist, on the right-hand side, please use the Preview tab. Review with Sophia Document will appear as following:

The dedicated interface will open - similar to the Family view interface - displaying three panels:

You can browse each publication stage on the left, and read the content accordingly with the central pane. However, Sophia Document tab remains, until you go Back to list (top left).

Open discussion with the patent

From now, all the questions you will ask, will rely on patent's content. You can ask for anything you want, as long as it relates to the patent. Here in example, based on a quick reading of Key Content tab, I want to know more about Oldham's ring and its importance in this context:

Sophia document will always make links to paragraphs and claims number, to source its answer with the patent's fulltext. There is no pre-defined formatting for your input, however we kindly advise to limit or remove any form of politeness - our prompting will eventually remove this.

If your input is detected as not relevant or not related to a patent discussion, an error message will appear.

The discussion will remain saved within your logon's personal data, until you decide to clear off with the Reset chat button at the top right.

Use our Prompt library

Our AI-team works to provide cutting-edge prompts, available in our library (at the bottom left).

if you would like to modify a prompt, we kindly advise to copy the most relevant for you, and edit this before pasting.

[Beta testing July 2025]: you cannot create your own library of prompts for the moment.

Prompts are categorized by use case:

  • Technical review: Understand core technical concepts, clearly define terms, and handle complex technical details.
  • Claims analysis: Understand the claims structure, identify claims support and limitations, detect claim form.
  • Data extraction: Extract scattered, important data from the patent text into actionable format.

You can apply several categories (AND) like Technical review and Claims analysis, by simply selecting one category after another. If no item displayed, mind to remove one category.

Here a typical starting point for an in-depth understanding of claims:

And here after the result:

Of course, the generated text could be copied, with the dedicated button at the bottom right of each answer, including the publication stage number & kind, and time-stamping:

Limits & Considerations

Experimental Phase: This is an experimental feature, and while powerful, it will be continuously improving.

Reminder for any AI-based tool: Sophia Document responses should always be cross-referenced with the user's own expert judgment and the original patent document.

Contextual limitations: The chatbot cannot provide legal advice or insights beyond the scope of the text it analyzes. Moreover, particularly lengthy patent documents may not be entirely put into the context of the underlying LLM used for Sophia Document.

Clarity of Prompts: The accuracy and helpfulness of the chatbot's responses are highly dependent on the clarity and specificity of your questions.

Non-deterministic output: While powerful, LLMs are not deterministic by nature. The same question can and will generate different responses from Sophia Document. ChatGPT 4.1 API is the current used model. Sophia Document utilizes OpenAI API via Questel servers and account. No personal information is shared with third parties
