Saved searches and alerts: "Not runnable" & "Too Complex" labels

Introduction

Search strategies from your saved searches or your alerts, might be incompatible with the new version Orbit Intelligence. We have decided to add labels:

  • "Not runnable"
  • "Too complex"
  • "Syntax error"

directly in our interface and draw your attention to modify these scripts.

Reasons for these labels

Mainly 4 reasons will trigger the addition of these labels:

  • Detection of obsolete and deleted search fields like /OWR /IW or /EC for the most frequent
  • An obsolete command is present and no longer available as a text like ..LIM
  • A deprecated operator like SDOC
  • Complexity in the keyword search, or too many search statements combined
  • Your strategy includes one or several errors in its syntax, and the search engine cannot run this script, until you fix the syntax issues

In each of these cases, our teams have created an article (link here) where you will find documents to help you modify your strategies.

Thanks to an algebraic simplification algorithm the complexity of search strategies is automatically reduced. This algorithm acts transparently and with no effect on search results.

As a result, the ‘not runnable’ label should appear much less frequently and you, as a user, do not have to change your work habits when writing strategies.

Too complex message when you save an alert

The main sources of this complexity (and thus, where the solution lies) are:

  • heavy use of unlimited truncations like BIO+, inducing (hundred) thousands different words, thus dramatically increases possibilities
  • redundant search fields like/DESC/CLMS/TX, where /TX means all descriptions and claims, redundant with /DESC/CLMS
  • many complex lines combined and re-used, sometimes dozens times

Solution is to simplify the script by removing redundant parts and factorizing it to avoid recalling previous lines, replacing + by one or several ? wherever it is possible etc...

For your saved scripts or alerts with this label, you cannot execute them "on the fly" and inject that into your current search history.

Its execution remains possible during the regular alert processing (weekly or monthly). To rephrase it, this strategy only runs as an alert, and no more practical as a saved search.

Not runnable

Saved searches or alerts could be tagged as Not runnable, when complexity exceeds the maximum threshold, or its logic is beyond any state-of-the-art computing program.

We kindly suggest to review and restructure any saved script or alert, in this situation.

In any case, the strategy cannot by executed in any situation. To rephrase it, you may see these scripts are "frozen" and not usable in Orbit Intelligence.
