Understand the KWIC (Key Words In Context) tab

Modified on Tue, 4 Apr, 2023 at 12:50 PM

The KWIC (Key Words In Context) tab displays the Key Words of a search in Context meaning the number of hits for the keywords in select fields, for example how many times a keyword was found in the claims.

This function is available for all Orbit database collections (FamPat, Fullpat and Fulltext) and gives you a smart overview of hits when you run a keyword search within the Advanced Search module (see example below):

To enable this tab, please make sure the KWIC tab is added to your customized display of search results. You can do that by using the + sign at the far right along the tab banner in the right panel, find the KWIC tab and click it. This will add the tab to your tab banner on the right hand side:

All fields in the entire family you searched, if they contain your keywords, are displayed.

This tab contains:

1) a summary by searched fields, where the table cells are colored following a blue shade scale:  the more the hits are found, the darker the cell will be.

2)  a summary by hit keywords, where the table cells are colored following a blue shade scale: the more the hits are found, the darker the cell will be.

3) a text section where you can display all the abstracts, titles, claims, etc. in the family if those fields contain your keywords.

The keywords found are in bold character.

To have a clearer view of keywords found, you might consider to use the highlighting function:
